Testo critico di Chiara Ioli

Davide Saba si muove in un mondo fatto di ricerca e analisi che molto deve all’ambito scientifico, all’interesse per l’entomologia e la zootomia. La mano dell’artista, armata di fiamma ossidrica, crea, con gesto libero e armonico, forme di esistenza anfibie, appartenenti ad ambientazioni preistoriche, ma che presto si liberano da questi riferimenti per iniziare a subire mutazioni e a vivere nel limbo lattiginoso e poroso delle sue tavole.

Animali dalle linee evolutive imprevedibili e surreali, ibridi che fanno sorgere dubbi su quale sia il loro regno d’appartenenza e che, in molti aspetti della loro anatomia, richiamano il nostro stesso organismo.

Emergendo dalla superficie, all’apparenza quasi fluida, dei supporti preparati per accoglierle, queste forme di vita corrono parallele alla nostra esistenza e intrecciano in alcuni punti la dimensione spazio-temporale umana.

L’artista si rende conto di non possedere una visione completa dell’evoluzione delle sue creature: esse stesse, in accordo inconsapevole con la mano del loro creatore, svelano la loro inconsueta evoluzione, le brusche svolte del progresso genetico che le ha dotate, di volta in volta, di zampe, vertebre o ali.

Non è possibile prevedere l’epilogo di questa storia evolutiva che trasporta messaggi fatti di silenzio e di fiamme: una comunicazione straniante, arcaica, ma dalla quale siamo inevitabilmente attratti, così come lo siamo dalle forme, aliene e al contempo empatiche, di questa specie.

Il lavoro di Davide Saba rappresenta lo sforzo di fermare per un attimo questa torma, di tentare una traduzione delle informazioni che essa veicola, prima che trovi il modo di modificarsi ancora, sfuggendo nuovamente al nostro occhio.

Davide Saba spans a world of research and analysis tightly connected with science, entomology and zootomy in particular. The artist's hand, armed of a blowtorch, moves free and harmonic, creating shapes which are born as prehistoric amphibian figures, but quickly break free, mutate and live in the milky and porous limbo of the author's panels.

Animals following unpredictable and surreal paths of evolution, mixed up to the point that one cannot tell to which realm each belong, and that often in their anatomy, remind us of ourselves.

Raising from the seemingly liquid surface of their supports, those life shapes run lives parallel to our own, sometimes crossing the human plan of existence.

The artist himself is aware of the incompleteness of his view of the evolution of his creatures: creatures who, secretly plotting together with the hand of the unaware artist, reveal the story of their unlikely evolution, and the sharp turns taken by their genetic mutations which has given them, over and again, paws, vertebrae or wings.

It is not possible to predict how this tale of evolution, and the messages made of silence and flames it carries, are going to end. The communication is estranging, ancestral, but we feel nevertheless dragged to it, as we feel dragged toward the alien, yet emphatic, shapes of this new species.

With his work, Davide Saba seems to be fighting to stop this herd, even if just for a moment, so that he can try and translate all the information it carries, before it mutates again, and returns to elude our grasp.
